Crazy weather, at least it was clear for most of the day. Turn on the radio and listen to the saga of the debt ceiling. Repulsive!
When are we going to see commercials warning of the dangers of credit use? Like tobacco, it’s dangerous to some at any level. When are we going to have politicians brave enough to take on the banks? Maybe it’s not a lack of courage as much as a lack of honesty, general lack of scruples.

Charley Reese’s final column for the Orlando Sentinel…
He has been a journalist for 49 years.
He is retiring and this is HIS LAST COLUMN.

Be sure to read the Tax List at the end.

This is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be. The article below is completely neutral, neither anti-republican or democrat. Charlie Reese, a retired reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgments made that impact each one of us every day.
-By Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted — by present facts — of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it’s because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan ….

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like “the economy,” “inflation,” or “politics” that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees…

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Charlie Reese is a former columnist of the Orlando Sentinel Newspaper.

Today I realized something. I’ve known this for a long time. Today I put it in words. I don’t read books I borrow. That’s not an absolute. Now and then, I do read a library book, and now and then, I will read a book someone has loaned me. That’s not the norm, though. Even if I’ve requested the book, I don’t read it.
I like to have my own book, my own copy. I don’t tear books up, fiction anyway. I’m very careful with them. In addition, I don’t mind loaning my books out. I wonder if not reading a borrowed book has to do with timing. That’s the first thing that comes to mind. I’m afraid that someone will suddenly say I need my book back. When will you finish? This has never happened. Therefore, what’s that say about me?
That’s for another entry….living in the moment.

July 6th, and the fireworks haven’t stopped. It’s 1:30 in the afternoon and Hampton is at my feet. During the day, he isn’t quite as afraid as he is at night, when he shivers and pants. Over the weekend, he woke me several times. So often that when I saw my mother yesterday she asked where I got the black eye. It’s called too little sleep. Hamp crawls under the covers, but won’t lie down. He stays close to my face and his panting, his hot breath, make me start to sweat.
I wonder if he has gotten worse because I was comforting when I first saw how the noise affected him. Or, would he have grown progressively more afraid of the firework noise, anyway?

After so much bad news about nature, not just from this spring but also from the last several years, I’ve noticed an abundance of birds, butterflies and bees as the seasons changed from winter into warm spring and summer days. So many different species visit my yard. I spot humming birds more than once a day, and watch them hover side by side with bees at the trumpet like flowers on my back fence.

On the trails, there are many species of butterflies, easy to spot. I know so little about them and the monarch is the only one I can for sure identify. A couple of weeks ago, a large one with pale yellow coloring enhanced with black markings took it’s time flying around the shrubs and I had a chance to get a good look at its beauty. It reminded me of something from the Victorian age, black lace in an ornate and delicate pattern.

Barney Frank talked to the press on Friday about the new bank regulations, and he told the reporters that they were being negative. The press responded that they were being careful to cover all possibilities. That’s a nice line, but it’s not true. The negative questions, the negative witnessing and reporting, all of it contributes to fear. People grab what the source they believe in tells them, often without question.

Thank you for insisting on clarity Representative Frank. For me, that means to hike in the hills, or to sit in my yard and enjoy all that comes my way. I am the witness.

What woman do you most admire?

While on the trails, 3 women in conversation jogged passed me. One of them said that during her job interview today, the interviewer asked her a question. “What woman do you most admire?” When her friends asked her response, she was quick to reply ‘Oprah’, as though a no-brainer. “But,” she said, “That is a controversial answer. Half the people don’t like Oprah.”

When and why did that happen? I don’t know about half, but I do remember the first time I heard someone say something about Oprah that was less than favorable. I was surprised, and noted that the reason behind the judgment was weak. Why would anyone waste his or her time not liking Oprah? Or anyone else you don’t know and will probably never meet.

Anyway, I think Oprah is an okay choice for the most admired woman. As I walked along losing sight of them, I thought about whom I would have picked. Maybe with more thought I would come up with other names. Hillary’s picture kept going through my mind, but I settled on Amma because of her hands-on humanitarian efforts. Another name came to mind, and surprised me a little. Shirley MacLaine, because of her courage. She opened herself to an experience and told her truth about it without backing down.

Just opened a browser and on the front page of the NY Times is an oil covered pelican.
Yesterday NPR reported that there are 120 positions that have not yet been senate approved due to anonymous blocks that Republicans put on the process. They threaten filibuster if the nomination process continues on the certain individual.
The Republican Party is doing what they can to insure that Obama cannot govern. This has been not so glaring. Now, we find out that there is no one in charge of the department which oversees fish and mammals.
This is enough! It’s outrages that politics is playing out in a disaster of this magnitude.
I’m pissed as hell over this. In a lot of ways one party is the same as the other. Not in this case, though. The Republicans are showing their self-serving at any cost motives at work, and their blatant racism. Anyone who supports that party at this time is out of their minds.

If that’s how we’re thinking, it’s pretty small thinking.
